story & personality
Ahkŭ remembers little about her human life and the details of her transformation. She was a member of the eastern Shoshone tribe. Her grandmother helped her escape into the mountains shortly before an attack on her community. She spent a few days in the wilderness, surviving off of the provisions packed for her. However, eventually the cold, altitude sickness, and insurmountable grief overcame her. In the moment of transformation, yellow flowers whirling around her in a brilliant dance of light and sound, she could only breathlessly gasp their name -- ahkŭ.
Memories of her previous life are experienced in tiny, impressionistic moments. Thick, black hair blown in front of the face of a smiling friend. The shrill whinny and low snuffs of prized horses. The breathing of the plains, rippling with the wind of summer thunderstorms. Ahkŭ knows her life was filled with much joy and ended with much suffering. Being transformed was a pleasant shock. She believes in endless cycles of nature and self, so becoming an esk was, to her, the next phase in her journey.
In the summer months, hikers often trek through the mountaintops where she makes her home. One day, she found a young woman who, like herself hundreds of years ago, was in distress and in dire need of help. She passed on the same act of kindness bestowed to her long ago, feeling at peace with her transition from beneficiary to benefactor. Since that transformation, Ahkŭ and the esk, Mabel, became friends and partners. Such as seasons come and pass, their relationship did too. Since then, Ahkŭ has been finding her own way in the mountains.
Ahkŭ loves to run and feel the crisp, mountain breeze. She collects stones, flowers, human artifacts, animal bones; any and all interesting trinkets adorn her dens. Often, Ahkŭ will travel between different mountain ranges and carves out a little place for herself to rest in each one. She finds a quieter joy in sunbathing on cushion plants and trying to dream of her past life.
She sees herself as a makeshift caretaker for her boundary, and believes her duty is to look after her small corner of the world and those who pass through it. Ahkŭ spends her days making her way through the alpine tundra, checking in with the flora, fauna, and friends she shares it with. Because of her calming, wise demeanor, esk seek her company and counsel. She has developed a mentorship and friendship with a number of these esk. As a self-fashioned protector of her boundary, Ahkŭ does not tolerate threats to the well-being of it or its inhabitants, and will antagonize those who threaten her or it. She can be threatening when necessary.
Ahkŭ communicates with those close to her by projecting feelings or images that bleed and project into the world around her, with an undercurrent of instruments. When she uses speech, it is in long, flowing sentences, with mostly formal vocabulary and nature metaphors. Her voice sounds like flutesong and gentle strings.

important notes
If writing about or drawing Ahkŭ, please be especially mindful when portraying Shoshone people, culture, history, and beliefs. Make sure to do the necessary research before portraying anything pertaining to her past. In general, regardless of past or present Ahkŭ, be vigilant in eliminating from your creations harmful, diminutive stereotypes associated with native peoples. For more information or to start your research, I suggest taking a look at the University of Utah's Shoshoni language project, where there are several archival videos of Shoshone people being interviewed sharing their culture and cultural practices.
Ahkŭ uses she/her pronouns and is a lesbian. Her identifiers are at the same time the framework for her beliefs and worldview, but also only a piece of her. Do not fetishize her heritage or her identity. I will do my best to portray her with sensitivity, but if I create something that does not follow these guidelines, feel free to privately message me so that we can discuss it. Thank you!

appearances
You may freely create art of Ahkŭ, as well as have your esk interact with her! However, please ask me beforehand if you plan on using her in a larger story arc, or if you would like to write solo literature about her.
She is a warm and kind presence. Though a little guarded towards newcomers, if you are not intent on disturbing her mountains, Ahkŭ will welcome you as a visitor. She is known for lending a gentle ear, giving advice, or showing itinerant esk around the alpine tundra where she makes her home.
Ahkŭ frequently travels, and will teleport to other mountain ranges for a change of pace, or journey into the area around her Rocky Mountain home. She feels comfortable in any biome, but is a notoriously bad swimmer. She occasionally visits the Conservatory, though mostly to chat with 000 than to visit with other esk.

transformations
Currently Ahkŭ is available to be used as a creator esk, story depending. Feel free to contact me on discord (snoodles#2090) or deviantart to ask. Due to her rocky past with transformations, this is not a given, but you are more than welcome to ask!
