story & personality
asa nisi masa
there was a deck of cards.
actually, there were many decks.
fear the day you draw THE PEDESTAL.
you will not recognize it by sight. you will recognize it by feel -- trepidation, morbid curiosity, hollow, aching dread.
and you will know it by your absence.
she is an exchange. what she gives, she takes. what she takes, she gives.
worry not. the card she replaces will be kept safe in her own deck.
you will get what you asked for. or what is coming to you. or maybe what you deserved all along.
for eons she survived this way, feeding and fleeing from others.
she flittered and fluttered and shuffled and sliced through many a hand.
then she found herself charge to a trio -- three unlike any before. three with games and dreams and tons of strawberry chapstick.
she loved them dearly,
then she lost them.
that's how it goes with games of chance and prophecy. some things you are doomed to love and lose.
in all her years, she finally lost.
she folded.
she became stuck, suspended, angry and alone.
fragmented.
forgotten.
until one day, the rusted wheel spun, the cycle continued, the fool left the world behind.
for the first time, someone found her instead.
the wanderer picked her up,
but drew a card she didn't like.
she meant to lay her to rest--
but she woke up.
now she is a silhouette on the horizon, as sturdy and crumpled as the rock she situates herself on.
sightless but seeing, sleepless but dreaming.
there was a deck of cards.
now there is something else.
one day you may meet her on a pedestal of stone.

relationships & interactionsIf you would like your esk to interact with Asa, you may do so! She is an enigmatic, somber figure. Speaking to her, you may get the impression that she once had a kind of threatening charisma and charm. Sparks of her old self may reignite, but on the whole she is a reclusive but accommodating sort. Asa's thrill comes from distilling small prophecies to esk that seek her out. Once she was a seemingly unending deck of mismatched cards. Fortune-tellers all over the globe would occasionally draw THE PEDESTAL, which replaced a card in their own deck. The missing card would then be added to her own collection. In the spirit of this, if you would like your esk to interact with Asa, you are also free to design an oracle card that represents the sort of advice, guidance, prophecy, or omen that your esk needs to hear (even if it is a hard truth). Oracle cards in Asa's deck are purposefully mismatched. They can look like anything (something inspired by Tarot, a commandeered playing card, a trading card) and depict anything within reason (an object, a scene, an archetype, etc.). |

design notes
Patterns shift and change on Asa's paper cowl. They are random geometric sigils comprised of triangles, lines, and nodes. It has been noted that these will warp and configure themselves into confusing patterns while she is giving a reading or displaying an emotion. Currently, it is unknown what exactly the significance and meaning of these symbols is.
These markings appear only on her paper, but otherwise feel free to play with their depiction. |

it's my only offering, and I pray that you refuse.
of everything that you're about to lose,
this will be the most painful.
