story & personality
Originally from the central mountains of Taiwan, 黑, traveled to Taipei during the early 1910's as a young woman to support herself and her family. While there, 黑 struggled to keep a purpose in the rapidly growing urban area and was eventually, mysteriously transformed.
Her main story as an esk takes place in Taipei, Taiwan during the 1980's, and her arc continues into present day. 黑 is witness to the rapid, radical changes of Taipei and Taiwanese society as a whole--she watches with glistening dark eyes the paranoia, the mind-body-soul encapsulating pressure of the KMT, and suddenly, the lifting of martial law. She feels restless, as if she has pressing unfinished business, and seems to perpetually suffer in that decade's zeitgeist of malaise.
黑 wanders Taipei, finding quiet in the middle of busy intersections and roaming the alleyways of night markets, weaving in and out of bicycle wheels and pedestrian knees. She spends a lot of time on public transit, drawn to the buzzing of similarly lost souls, but has yet to perform a transformation. Instead 黑 opts for spiritual comfort (though she would never admit it), sitting at their feet and following them to their destination. She prefers to be corporeal, roaming occasionally with packs of stray dogs to keep cover from the hoards of lost souls in the city. Despite her seeming distaste for her urban prison, 黑 is reluctant to leave Taipei. She feels mentally blocked from wandering outside the confines of the city.
Her general sadness and anger cause her to seldom manifest all of her nature features in their full splendor. Only when she is in her tucked away boundary, in the small urban garden in an intersection of a tiny neighborhood, she finds herself in full bloom. She has a soft spot for stray animals as well as young children. 黑 thinks of the younger sister she left behind in the mountains and wishes for the children she meets to avoid the same fate she has.
黑 speaks seldom. In her self-isolation, she has scant opportunities to anyways. When she speaks, her voice sounds like a synthesized bass in another room--low drumming notes that seem to weave around your ankles and echo deep in your chest.

important notes
If writing about or drawing 黑, please be especially mindful when portraying Taiwanese or 太魯閣族 (Truku) people, culture, history, and beliefs. In general, regardless of past or present 黑, be vigilant in eliminating from your creations harmful, diminutive stereotypes associated with Asian or native peoples.
黑 uses she/her pronouns and is a lesbian. Her identifiers are at the same time the framework for her beliefs and worldview, but also only a piece of her. Do not fetishize her heritage or her identity. I will do my best to portray her with sensitivity, but if I create something that does not follow these guidelines, feel free to privately message me so that we can discuss it. Thank you!

appearancesYou may create art of 黑 freely, but please ask before including her in esk interactions or writing about her. She is extremely bitter, elusive, and does not take kindly to outsiders. She frequently wanders from her street corner boundary, but almost never leaves the vicinity of Taipei. 黑 does not visit the Conservatory. |

other
one day, 黑 felt something.
a warm moth-wingbeat deep deep deep in her heart
cradling the tiny flutter in small, worn hands, she carefully extended it outwards
but it was swatted away, trampled on, ground into the dirt
ashamed, bereaved, exiled
struggling to stay afloat in the bustle of the growing tumor of the city
tastes the dust and the sneers but would rather wilt here than rot at home
late nights, early mornings
reeking of fish from the docks,
hands stained black from newspaper ink,
hair full of cigar granules that float and cling like spores
pocketing one crisp bill; the rest to the post
exhaustion but mindless relief
one day, 黑 heard something
two soldiers, passing a cigar between their lips
spitting
troublesome worms blocking progress
grinding out a cigarette and her heart into the grey stones
mounting their horses, merging into one mass, out and up and south towards the city gates
towards the mountains
one day, 黑 felt something
deep deep deep in her gut
bile
