story & personality
Your insolence will be your scar. You dare to defy the will of StarClan, yet strive to be its liaison.
Listen to me, you bumbling, overgrown kit. You will not waste your gift. This deed will never go unpunished.
On the day of her warrior ceremony, Mosspaw was to be honored and entrusted with the fiercest suffix, -claw, after the legendary founding deputy of StormClan. StarClan had brought a vision to both the medicine cat and leader of StormClan--Mossclaw was prophesied to be a great warrior who would bring StormClan out of strife into glory.
She must carry this power as instinctively as her own name, or else StormClan would fall.
Her father, the leader of StormClan, knew that despite his love for his daughter and her wishes to become a medicine cat, he must do as StarClan themselves instruct. But still, she begged and begged and begged until one day he relented. Mosspaw was allowed to assist the current medicine cat as long as it didn't interfere with her warrior duties. After all, it is pragmatic for warriors to learn battlefield remedies, and Mosspaw wanted to learn.
Leafbare that year fell upon StormClan like an avalanche. Warriors and kits alike succumbed to greencough and yellowcough, straining the clan's ability to feed and protect itself. The medicine cat fell ill, the deputy and climbers and arbiters one by one falling shortly after. Soon, Mosspaw's father limped into the medicine cat den, but no amount of lungwort or feverish prayers would heal him. But Mosspaw knew she could save him. She had to. She knew of a small patch of yarrow that had been weakly growing all leaf fall and leaf bare, barely surviving the frost. Mosspaw underwent an arduous journey to retrieve the herb and brought it to him, watching with relief as he chewed the remedy she had been working to acquire.
In the morning, he was found dead.
The leader of StormClan was poisoned.
Hemlock.
Grief-stricken and disgraced, Mosspaw was chased out from her home, barely escaping with her life. She traveled aimlessly as a rogue, journeying for some time before stumbling upon a gruff stranger in need of healing. She patched him up, earning the nickname Yarrow, and the two slowly gained each other's trust. Eventually, he introduced her to a medicine cat of another nearby clan of cats (and one in desperate need of another healer).
Left in his care, Moss began reluctantly at first retraining as a medicine cat apprentice. This was not without difficulty--she remains plagued by visions of her ancestor, urging her to give up this silly distraction and return to her home in glory. She is being selfish, wasting her gift and spending time gallivanting around while her family, the cats who raised her, suffer. Moss struggles with maintaining a clear connection to StarClan, and continues to have exhausting nightmares. Though, the greatest of all her battles is fought with her self doubt and guilt. Is this really all worth it?
But who can truly say what happened on that fateful leaf bare night?
Did she incorrectly pick hemlock? Intentionally poison her father?
Maybe it was yarrow after all.
